The Town of Blackfalds is accepting applications for a Seasonal Bylaw Officer.

The Bylaw Officer is responsible for assisting with enforcing municipal Bylaws and regulations during the summer season. This role involves patrolling designated areas, investigating complaints, and ensuring compliance with bylaws that promote the safety, health, and well-being of the community. The position offers valuable hands-on experience for students interested in law enforcement, public safety, or local governance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess excellent judgment, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • A general understanding of current law enforcement practices.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Comfortable using technology, including mobile devices and computers.
  • Physical ability to conduct patrols and inspections as needed.
  • General knowledge of municipal bylaws and provincial statutes. 
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and remain calm in challenging situations.
  • The ability to respond swiftly and effectively using trained skills in emergencies.

Position Requirements:

  • Maintain detailed notes on daily activities, and observations while on patrol. 
  • Work closely with youth, building relationships. 
  • Patrol assigned areas by monitoring compliance with local bylaws (e.g., parks & trails, noise, parking, property maintenance, waste management, etc.). Assist with keeping parks clean by arranging for the collection and removal of litter and graffiti, if required. Assess whether damage, graffiti, or other behaviors are creating a potential risk to the Town of Blackfalds and report to the supervisor.
  • Provide public education on local bylaws, regulations, and compliance procedures.
  • Report damage, accidental or vandalism, to the appropriate Town Staff
  • Complete incident reports and provide them to the supervisor.
  • Maintain regular contact and close working relations with all Town of Blackfalds departments
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education and Experience:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program related to law enforcement, criminal justice, or a similar field. One year of law enforcement experience is considered an asset.

Additional Requirements:

    • Standard First Aid with CPR “C” and AED.
    • Valid Driver’s License with current Drivers Abstract
    • RCMP Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check and obtain and maintain an enhanced RCMP security clearance.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
    • The wearing of an official identifying uniform is mandatory.

 

The position works a 40-hour work week.

The starting hourly wage is $21.78 per hours to $24.51 per hour.
