Parks Laborer (Seasonal)

The Town of Blackfalds is accepting applications for Seasonal Parks Laborers to work with crew members in our Parks department, performing various manual and physical tasks throughout the Town of Blackfalds.

The seasonal parks laborer will be responsible for carrying out tasks assigned by the Manager and or Parks Operator III related to the maintenance and/or repairs of all town facilities, parks, playgrounds, sports fields, bike skills park, tennis courts, green spaces, boulevards, trails, community gardens, and other open green spaces.   

Ability to operate a variety of trucks & equipment that are used in all areas of park operations and enhance customer service levels and maintain municipal assets. Ensures the safe use and operation of small and large equipment and vehicles by staff and yourself.  Promotes and participates in the Town Safety program and practices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Minor services of vehicles (check oil and fill fuel tanks) and pre-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Operates a variety of specialized power and light hand tools to perform manual tasks and is required to drive light vehicles.
  • Ensures the citizens of Blackfalds and its visitors receive an improved quality of life by providing safe, clean, outdoor facilities and open spaces.
  • Carries out all tasks and projects within Occupational Health and Safety standards and municipal policies and procedures.
  • Contributions to the creation of Standard Operating Guidelines and procedures for Parks and Facilities Department tasks.
  • Maintains and supports a positive and proactive Customer Service philosophy throughout the Department.
  • Assists in the maintenance of municipal parks, playgrounds, Bike Skills Park, green spaces, sports fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, boulevards, and other open spaces, ensuring that these spaces are safe and meet required standards by performing weekly safety and level of service checks including garbage removal (above ground and in-ground receptacles), graffiti removal, etc.
  • Assists in arboricultural activities that may include pruning, climbing, operation of aerial bucket truck, chipper, felling trees, various mechanized pruning tools, monitoring and treatment of pests and weeds.
  • Assists with the inspection of trees and shrubs for any health and safety issues while doing routine maintenance.
  • Assists in all aspects of turf grass maintenance.
  • Assists in weekly ‘Rounds’ and playground inspections.
  • Carries out assigned tasks such as mowing, trimming, seeding, watering, planting, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, leaf and litter removal, and other duties as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned by the Manager and or Parks Team.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Grade 12 accreditation.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with current Driver’s Abstract.
  • RCMP Criminal Record Check.
  • Standard First Aid / CPR / AED Certification. 
  • Ability to obtain WHMIS Certification.
  • Experience playing on sports teams.
  • Experience operating and maintaining equipment such as tractors, utility vehicles, skid steers, large area mowers, towing trailers, and/or other related equipment.

The hours of work are 80 hours every 2 weeks. 

The starting hourly wage for the Seasonal Parks Laborer is $21.78 / hour.
