The Town of Blackfalds is seeking an energetic, dynamic individual for the position of Facility Operator I. 

The role requires proficiency in operating a variety of equipment essential to facility operations, such as ice resurfacing machines, skid steers, lawn tractors, and auto scrubbers, while also fulfilling standby duties as needed.

A strong commitment to customer service is critical, as the position involves direct interaction with both staff and the public, requiring a courteous, professional, and approachable demeanor at all times.

Position Requirements:

  • Maintains Town-owned facilities by supporting a preventative building and equipment maintenance/repair schedule.
  • Ensures a high level of custodial service is maintained in all facilities.
  • Assists with regular inspections of all Town-owned facilities and reports any maintenance problems to the Facilities Foreman.  Carries out repairs to buildings upon instruction.
  • Prepares Town facilities for scheduled functions (cleaning, set up, take down).
  • Provides snow removal for all Town owned facilities and other assigned areas.
  • Review, respond, and close service requests and work orders.
  • Ensures that all tasks and projects carried out by the assigned work unit are carried out within Occupational Health and Safety standards and Town policies and procedures.
  • Ability to carry out work at heights, such as working on ladders, rooftops, and aerial lifts.
  • Prepares ice surface for user groups as per user schedule, performs ammonia plant maintenance and record keeping, ice resurfacer operation and maintenance, ice making, and ensures building cleanliness.
  • Prepares ball diamonds and soccer pitches for user groups as per user schedule. Duties include infield preparation (shale dragging), line chalking, grass painting, fence maintenance, and ensuring facility cleanliness.
  • In cooperation with the Facilities Foreman, encourages teamwork, and shares and rewards outstanding contributions for individual and group efforts.  Provides input into staff development and training programs.
  • Maintains and supports a positive and proactive Customer Service philosophy throughout the Department.
  • Proven ability to deal directly with staff and the public in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned by the Facilities Foreman.

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 accreditation combined with a minimum of one to two years of facility or arena experience.
  • Alberta Association of Recreational Facility Personnel Arena Operator Level 1 Certificate.
  • Related experience, preferably municipal, in recreation, arena, and/or sports field environment, including the ability to operate and maintain department machinery such as skid steers, large area mowers, tractors, towing trailers, utility vehicles, etc.   

Additional Requirements:

  • RCMP Criminal Record Check with the ability to obtain R.C.M.P Enhanced Security Clearance.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Check may also be required.
  • Current and valid driver's license (Air Brake endorsement preferred) and ability to operate department machinery as required.
  • WHMIS Certification or ability to obtain.
  • Standard First Aid / CPR / AED Certification.

The hours of work are 80 hours per 14-day pay period.

The hourly wage for Facility Operator I is $30.79 / hour - $34.53 / hour as per the CUPE Local 417 Collective Agreement 2025 - 2027.
