The Town of Blackfalds is seeking a dependable and skilled Facility Operator I – Building Maintenance to join the Facilities team. This position plays an important role in maintaining Town facilities to ensure safe, clean, and well‑functioning environments for staff, residents, and visitors.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Parks and Facilities Manager, the Facility Operator I participates as a key member of the facilities team and is responsible for carrying out facility maintenance and custodial duties across all Town facilities. This role supports planned work activities, operates a variety of maintenance equipment, fulfills standby duties as required, and promotes excellent customer service and safety practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform facility maintenance and custodial duties across all Town facilities
- Support planned and preventative maintenance activities
- Assist in determining staff, equipment, and materials required to complete assigned tasks
- Operate a variety of equipment used in facility maintenance
- Conduct regular facility inspections and report maintenance concerns
- Maintain municipal assets to a high standard of care
- Complete hazard assessments and follow all Health and Safety requirements
- Work at heights using ladders, rooftops, and aerial lifts as required
- Fulfill standby duties in accordance with Town procedures
- Provide courteous and professional service to staff and the public
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to deal with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labour
- Strong planning, organizing, and problem‑solving skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong time management skills and flexibility to adjust between duties
Education & Experience
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- One (1) to two (2) years of facility or building maintenance experience, preferably in a municipal or public service environment
- Mechanical aptitude or experience is considered an asset
- Related experience in recreation, arena, or facility environments is an asset
Additional Requirements
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence
- Standard First Aid / CPR / AED certification
- WHMIS certification or ability to obtain
- Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check may be required)
Physical & Work Environment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, standing, walking, and climbing
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Dynamic work environment with varying noise levels depending on equipment and activities

Hours of Work & Compensation
- Full‑time, 80 hours bi‑weekly
- Wage: $30.79 to $34.53 per hour in accordance with the CUPE Local 417 Collective Agreement (2025–2027).
- This position is covered under the CUPE Collective Agreement, and all terms and conditions of employment will be governed accordingly.
