Sports & Events Manager

The Town of Blackfalds is seeking an experienced and energetic Sports & Events Manager to lead the operations, strategy, and signature events that bring our community together.

This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for managing the Eagle Builders Centre, all Athletic Parks, and the planning and delivery of major community and regional events. If you’re motivated by excellence, collaboration, and creating memorable experiences, we’d love to hear from you.

 


What You’ll Do

As the Sports & Events Manager, you will provide visionary leadership and hands-on oversight across facilities, sport operations, and events, including:

Facilities & Sport Operations

  • Lead the overall management and strategic direction of the Eagle Builders Centre and all Town athletic parks.
  • Oversee daily operations, maintenance programs, leasing, rentals, and service delivery to ensure safe, efficient, and financially sustainable facilities.
  • Manage and support a dedicated team.
  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, identifying opportunities for cost savings, efficiencies, and lifecycle upgrades.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with major user groups, tenants, leaseholders, vendors, and partners, including the Blackfalds Bulldogs.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory standards.

Events Leadership

  • Lead the planning, design, bidding, and delivery of community, regional, and major sport events.
  • Oversee signature Town events such as Blackfalds Days, Winterfest, Light Up Blackfalds, and the Culture Series.
  • Collaborate with Economic Development, Marketing & Communications, and external partners to attract major event opportunities.
  • Develop and implement sponsorship strategies and pursue grant and funding opportunities.
  • Ensure exceptional service throughout all phases of events—from concept to post-event evaluation.

What You Bring

You are a confident, collaborative leader with strong operational and people-management skills, bringing:

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Recreation Administration, Recreation Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in sport management and event management.
  • Proven experience managing complex facilities, budgets, and large-scale events.
  • Strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and a leadership style that inspires high performance.

Assets Include:

  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Technical certifications (turfgrass management, ice maintenance, HVAC, building maintenance).
  • Experience negotiating contracts and lease agreements.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
  • RCMP Criminal Record Check.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for events.
  • Ability to perform light physical duties related to event set-up and operations.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Annual Salary: $114,818.34 – $137,299.34, commensurate with experience
  • 35-hour work week, supporting work–life balance.
